Islamic Center of South Bay Finally Able to Renovate Lomita Mosque

After initially being denied a permit to renovate their aging and unsuitable mosque, the Islamic Center of South Bay (ICSB) finally settled with the City of Lomita, had its permits approved, and will be breaking ground on their new center soon.

Following the filing of a lawsuit alleging religious discrimination under RLUIPA (Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act) by ICSB and a similar one by the Department of Justice, ICSB submitted a second application for a building permit. Hearings were held with both the planning commission and the city council in late 2013, and the final approval was handed down in October 2013. ICSB dismissed their claim against the City of Lomita and will be starting construction soon under a settlement agreement and with an approved building permit.
