CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEYS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZER FILE SUIT AFTER BEING SHOT WITH 40MM “RUBBER BULLETS” BY LAPD OFFICER

Civil rights attorneys and organizers call for accountability after LAPD Officer Rick Linton unlawfully shot them with rubber bullets at anti-ICE demonstration On April 7, 2026, Hadsell Stormer Renick & Dai, LLP, joined with co-counsel A. Dami Animashaun, Colleen Flynn, and Jacob Loup and clients civil rights attorneys Ricci Sergienko and Shakeer Rahman and community organizer Jason Reedy, announced the filing of a lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles Police Department officers for unlawfully targeting and shooting the public with 40 millimeter rubber bullets during an anti-ICE protest.

On June 9, 2025, community organizer Jason Reedy and civil rights attorneys Ricci Sergienko and Shakeer Rahman joined a march to protest ICE. After the three observed LAPD Officer Rick Linton aiming a 40mm rubber bullet launcher at non-violent protesters, Linton pointed his weapon at Mr. Reedy and shot him in the groin. Linton then reloaded and shot Mr. Sergienko in the stomach.

Mr. Rahman began to record Officer Linton and demanded that Linton, whose name and serial number were removed from his helmet, identify himself. In response, Linton threatened Mr. Rahman, yelling, “I’m gonna pop you right now because you’re taking up my focus.” Linton shot Mr. Rahman in the groin with a 40mm rubber bullet. When Mr. Rahman continued to demand Linton identify himself, Linton shot Rahman in the groin a second time. Other LAPD officers, including Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton, stood idly throughout Linton’s shooting spree.

“By shooting two civil rights attorneys and an organizer for simply asking why Linton was pointing his weapon at protesters, Linton and the LAPD sent the loud and clear message that they believe they can commit violence with impunity, are above the law and answer to no one,” said Hadsell Stormer Renick & Dai LLP attorney Bina Ahmad. “Unfortunately for them, we are here to make them answer for what they did, stand up to their violence and show they are not above the law.”
Mr. Reedy, Mr. Sergienko, and Mr. Rahman and their attorneys bring this lawsuit to recover for the serious injuries they have sustained as a result of Officer Linton’s excessive and unjustified violence and to hold LAPD accountable for its officer’s unchecked and uncontrolled use of rubber bullets to attack demonstrators.
